Paris Streets - Perceptions
Artist’s Statement
In my latest work I deal with the underlying motif of the urban pedestrian, lost and lonely - this time by seeking shelter from rain in the maze of Parisian streets, or peeking at shop windows or street art.
The work is of relevance to the anxiety experienced worldwide with recession, the loss of income and the confusion of what the future holds.
I explore these issues with imagery of window models, some dressed, some half stripped and some naked in shop windows…
I visually play with the written word that refers to the end of a season, but becomes symbolic of our psychological state.
Retail windows we associate with elegance and wealth - now some covered with white paper that has a chilly feeling of bodies covered up.
As previously the ominous feeling of the work is balanced by beauty, flashes of gorgeous, brilliant bright color, caught as if by chance, reflected in shiny wet surfaces, shop windows and colourful street art, giving the spectator a rush of optimism and enjoyment, even if it is only for that very moment.
